Mobilize Youth Leadership Program
"The greatest benefit was hearing how similar my experiences were with someone who is successful. It encouraged me that I could, one day, be in their shoes. My favorite part was the connections I’ve gained here because they could help me in the future."
Venus Lee, Valley High School, 2022 Sacramento UNITY Leadership Program "[A] great benefit I received was the mentors and people who were ready to help support me. I would recommend APIs Mobilize to others because it gives you so many benefits, opportunities, and knowledge that many of the youth don’t know of. It also opens up doors for you." Rabiya Saleem, Valley High School, 2022 Sacramento UNITY Leadership Program |
“The greatest benefit I received from the program was being able to reflect on who I am. I loved being here and I’ve met many great people. I also gained a lot of insight from the speakers who shared their experiences and advice. Not only does APIs Mobilize teach you how to be great leader, but how we can be ourselves while being a leader. Leaders come in different shapes and sizes.” Melody Cao, Oakland Charter, 2018 Mobilize Youth Program |
“The leadership program gave me something productive to do over my high school summer. I got to learn more about public policy, meet new people, and be inspired to make a positive difference in life. I particularly remember Annie sharing her experience regarding Asian discrimination, and it was inspiring to learn about the significance of standing up for oneself (and for others). I was also fortunate enough to get connected to work as a Congressional intern for my local representative. That gave me an early experience of what the working world is like and it also helped me decide whether or not if this line of work was for me. Michael Kwok, Arcadia High School, 2016 Mobilize Youth Program |
"Prior to joining this program, I knew I wanted to work in government as a potential career pathway, but then withdrew from that career choice because I was heavily discouraged by the overwhelming political activities happening recently and the constant negative comments I see... Why would I want to pursue a career in government where all people do is complain and criticize me day and night no matter how much progress I made? Why would I want to work in an unhealthy environment like that, when I could work my way in corporate tech or business? But It’s clear where we stand. I’ve learned that indeed these cons to working in government exist, but when you have the heart to serve your community, these concerns do not have to be a barrier. We need more Asian Pacific Islanders in government, because we have such a rich culture, experience, and perspective that we can bring to the table...We must represent those who cannot or are unwilling to speak for themselves, because who else will do it? We can." Tiffany Tong, 12th Grade, Oakland Tech, 2018 Mobilize Youth Program |
“I saw first-hand not only how much influence public policy has on society, but also the real need for the community to be engaged with the political process in our country. The legislative internship helped me develop real-world skills and connections. I highly recommend this program.” Titus Wu, Arcadia High School, 2015 Mobilize Youth Program |
“APIs Mobilize educated me on the community that surrounds us. Whether it’s the history of the people or the process of government and real estate, the speakers who came in every week did an excellent job informing us. My favorite part was traveling to the fortune cookie factory to not only see how they are made, but to understand how these small family businesses function. After I was done with my first session, I buzzed with excitement telling my parents and admittedly bragged to my friends how cool it was. The program educated us on so many topics I didn’t know about and let us experience awesome speeches, events, and locations.” Evan Quan, El Ceritto High School, 2018 Mobilize Youth Program |
